The Scrapbook Embellishment Handbook – Why A Creative Scrapbooker Shouldn’t Just Ignore It

Embellishment is something that’s always on the list of creative scrapbookers and crafters alike. When they go to the craft store, they might spends some times checking out the embellishment sections in the shops for new and in season embellishments kits and ideas.

To me, in this part of the world, buying embellishment kits can be an expensive thing to do .What more if you just cannot stop putting it in your scrapbook ‘to buy list’. That’s why sometimes, creating your own embellishment kits can be a good thing. It might not be of the same quality or shape as the one in the shop but you can be more creative in making it.

You can make use of your colorful scrap papers that you keep and combine it with buttons, ribbons and other items to make a brand new embellishment kits for your creative scrapbooking project.

But where do you go for ideas on embellishment for your scrapbook?

In my opinion, you can check out Scrapbook Embellishment Handbook by Sherry Steveson.

The Scrapbook Embellishment Handbook

The Scrapbook Embellishment Handbook

This book is cool and you can get a lot of ideas from it. It covers popular types of embellishment and also shows how you can use them in your layouts. Some of things that they cover include fibers, buttons, die cut, flowers and many others. There are 17 of them altogether.

Having 17 different embellishment can be overwhelming for beginners but don’t fret about it because they cover how a beginner can use it and later progress to intermediate and advanced level for each type. There are mini step by step for you to check out also.

My favorites among the 17 are flowers and stamps. Maybe it’s just me because I’m a beginner scrapbooker :)

The Scrapbook Embellishment Handbook

One thing that I like most about this book is the color and design inspiration that I can learn from the scrapbooking artists that take part in the book. They make the process looks so easy and simple..heck..maybe it’s easy and I should try it myself.

Chronological Scrapbooking – How to do it?

Simple chronological scrapbooking tips for beginners

Scrapbooking beginners will typically starts their first scrapbook project chronologically. There is no right or wrong
in doing this and in my opinion, this is the easiest way to start your scrapbook.

What does it mean when you do chronological scrapbooking?

1) You started of by sorting your photos by date and you can scrapbook it in that order

2) Each of your scrapbook page will focus on the event happened on that particular date

So, your scrapbook can begin with the title and table of  content page. From there, your scrapbook will proceed from the
event happened in ‘beginning’ to the one at the ‘latter’ date.

Chronological Scrapbook is Easy For Beginners to Follow

Chronological Scrapbook is Easy For Beginners to Follow

Let say if you want to tell a story about your 5 days trip to Bahamas.

The title page could be ” My 5 Days Trips to Bahamas”. I know it is not catchy but you get the ideas.

Which style do you want to use? Well, you can choose to list down your main event for each day and start to work from there or you can also do a highlight of random events for each date.

The choice if yours. Be creative in your design.

You can work forward or backward from the day you arrive in Bahamas. Some people prefer to start from the last day then move on to the first day… in short, they went backward  in time.

This might sound awkward but it has its own advantages. You’ll normally have a better memory of the most recent event so you can include more details about it.

Chronological scrapbooking does need to be boring… you can focus on your photos and maybe cut it in certain shapes using those cute cutters or if you are up to some challenge, you can try mosaic pattern on your photos. My advice, do it on the duplicate copy of your photos :)

So, pick whatever style that you are comfortable with and don’t forget to be creative in your scrapbook design. Open your mind and let the ideas flow.. Nobody said you can’t be wild in your imagination. Let your personality shine through your creative scrapbook design

Creative Scrapbooking Tips for Beginners

Easy to follow creative scrapbooking tips for beginners.

I found this useful you tube video explaining the basic design princle of how you can create an eye catching and creative scrapbook design.

There are actually few simples principle that you can apply when trying to layout your scrapbook page. One simple example is placing the photos at an appropriate place on your scrapbook page. You don’t want to put your photos too near to the edge as it will make it look “off-centred”. You want to achieve a balance look amake the photo proportionates to your page.

Using Focal Point

The concept of creating focal point is also important and will ensure that your scrapbook design looks pleasing to the eyes. You can achieve this by using one main photo that is bigger in size and place it at the centre – tilting it a little.

Using Visual Triangle

The scrapbook expert also touch on the ideas of visual triangle and explain how our eyes follow when we were looking at a scrapbook page. You can place your main visual element or photos at the centre of this triangle and place other supporting element at the remaining location.

So, if you are running out of ideas when composing your scrapbook layout, try to implement this simple creative scrapbooking tips: “create a visual triangle with your photos and embelishment“. And maybe surround it with cathcy text font that will make your design looks very creative.

So, is this tips useful?

What about you? What are your thoughts on this subject?
